Yesterday morning, Ken got up earlier than I did, and he was feeding Toeffe as I was looking for breakfast. Ken made up a bowl of food and took it into the den, and Toeffe followed him, purring. A minute later, I opened a can (of something other than cat food). At the sound, Toeffe abandoned his bowl and came running back into the kitchen expectantly. Conditioning is a strange thing. Ken showed him his food (again) and he was happy (again).
