I feed Toeffe his stinky canned food every morning before work, so he'll tolerate being locked in the den all day. He knows the routine, of course, and starts begging when he sees me brushing my teeth.

Yesterday morning, Ken got up earlier than I did, and he was feeding Toeffe as I was looking for breakfast. Ken made up a bowl of food and took it into the den, and Toeffe followed him, purring. A minute later, I opened a can (of something other than cat food). At the sound, Toeffe abandoned his bowl and came running back into the kitchen expectantly. Conditioning is a strange thing. Ken showed him his food (again) and he was happy (again).
